With the Modeling Classes, ETIM offers a BIM concept that combines many advantages for our industrial customers and which we therefore actively support.

ETIM stands for a standardized product classification that enables the exchange of technical data in different languages. Data is transferred via the BMEcat format, which is recognized worldwide. The standard is regularly developed further, with the current version being ETIM 8.0. Since version 3.0, crossbase has comprehensively supported the ETIM classification.
ETIM has extended the existing base classes with so-called modeling classes. These have been specially developed for use in the BIM sector. Each modelling class is linked to a parameterizable 3D CAD model and contains geometric features that are matched to the respective base class.
Example: Modeling Class EC001007
The modeling class for a reducer for cable trays (EC001007) contains:
The associated 3D CAD model with reference to the geometric features and the basic features can be found here.
A special feature are the so-called ports, which make it possible to use a geometric feature such as the insertion length for several connection points. This significantly reduces the number of features required.
The modeling classes allow planners to create manufacturer-neutral BIM objects that can be used flexibly in planning tools. In later planning phases, these neutral objects can be exchanged for manufacturer-specific BIM objects that contain detailed product information such as color, material or technical properties.
ETIM MC offers manufacturers a decisive advantage: they do not have to provide specific BIM files for different systems such as Revit or Allplan. Instead, it is sufficient to provide their products with geometric data in accordance with the modeling classes. This data can then be used to generate manufacturer-specific 3D CAD models.
The BMEcat format serves as an exchange platform and has been extended by special constructs (User Defined Extensions, UDX) in order to transfer modeling class-specific features. crossbase now supports over 300 3D BIM objects and has adapted its data model accordingly:
The introduction of the ETIM Modelling Classes marks a milestone in the standardization of BIM data. Manufacturers, architects and planners alike benefit from more efficient data provision and use. With minimal effort, manufacturers can make their data available for BIM applications, significantly simplifying the building data modeling process.
crossbase offers comprehensive support for ETIM modeling classes and enables easy integration into existing workflows, making the use of BIM even more accessible in practice.
